Before Surgery
Before surgery, your doctor will likely conduct a medical examination, chest X-ray, EKG and bloodwork. You will want to tell your doctor the type and amount of medications you take so they can inform you about how soon you need to stop taking them before surgery. The night before surgery, you will perform an enema using a home kit. After completing the enema, please do not drink or eat anything.
During Surgery
The procedure involves the fusion of the front part of the spine from below. Only the lower-most discs are impacted. A surgeon will make an incision just above the tailbone, where they will use a tube to pass instruments through and remove disc tissue. After the area has been cleaned out, the surgeon will position bone graft within a cage inside the disc space to increase stability. The graft is combined with bone and looks like a cage made from screws. The procedure takes around 1-3 hours to complete and the hospital stay is approximately 1-2 days. You won’t have to wait long to be back on your feet because your doctor will try to get you out of bed on the same day as your surgery.
After Surgery
You will receive a brace or corset to prevent bending and allow the fused area to heal. We will give you all the materials necessary to recuperate quickly, including prescriptions and exercises to rehab the area of your back that we operated on. The great news is that you will be able to ride in a car or plane after discharge from the hospital. You need to be very cautious of your movements after surgery and refrain from twisting and bending. Recovery time depends on the severity of the surgery, the type of career the patient works in, age and health of the patient.
